Running in several different directions and constantly trying to keep up with the world today can create an enormous amount of stress. While some stress is a natural and unavoidable part of life, intense and prolonged stress is a huge health concern. This type of stress is related to complications such as heart problems and dementia. It is incredibly important to your health and well-being to learn effective relaxation and coping techniques.
**Practicing relaxation techniques can reduce stress symptoms by:**
* Slowing your heart rate
* Lowering blood pressure
* Slowing your breathing rate
* Reducing activity of stress hormones
* Increasing blood flow to major muscles
* Reducing muscle tension and chronic pain
* Improving concentration and mood
* Lowering fatigue
* Reducing anger and frustration
* Boosting confidence to handle problems
Relaxation looks different for everyone. For some it means completely unwinding by sitting in silence, practicing deep breathing, meditating, or even taking a nap. For others it involves activities such as running, biking, creating art, or writing. In general, relaxation techniques involve refocusing your attention on something calming and increasing awareness of your body. It doesn't matter which relaxation technique you choose. What matters is that you try to practice relaxation regularly and reduce your stress.
We’ve all had a “Best Friend” - a BFF (if that’s what they are still called now-a-days). You know, someone that will always tell you the truth, doesn’t lie to you - EVER, is always there, supports you through the good and bad times. Sometimes they don’t say a word, but you know they are always there - available; ready when you are.
Mine has been with me a long time. Actually, now that I think about it, nearly 12 years! Wow! We’ve seen a lot of ups and down together - literally! Some of my highest points and some of my lowest; but never a harsh, demeaning, or degrading word shared - only what I needed to know right then, right there.
So who is my true-best friend you ask?
It’s my scale. Yep! My 12 year old scale! And no - I’m not nuts. Think about everything I just shared. My scale has never lied to me; it may not have told me what I wanted but has always told me what I needed to know right then, it doesn’t judge, and it truly supports me in my goals.
So don’t be afraid of your scale or think of your scale as the bearer of bad news. Embrace it - you never know where it will take you!

So, really, what’s the big deal about drinking water? If you don’t drink water, you will die! It’s that important. We can live much longer without food. For most of us, we could increase the consumption of water and make it a higher priority. Did you know that it prevents cancer? Yup, that’s right. Various research shows that staying hydrated can reduce the risk of colon cancer, bladder cancer, and possibly, breast cancer, as well. Need an attitude adjustment? Drink more water! Research, also shows that dehydration can affect your mood and make you grumpy and confused. Be happy and drink your water!
Also, you should be drinking around 64 oz. of water, and if you are unsure of how much water is okay to drink while on certain medications, please check with your doctor.
Water plays a key role in supporting health during weight loss and on into maintenance! This is a habit we want to keep FOREVER! It helps remove toxins and other unhealthy substances stored in your fat cells. Being well-hydrated helps all your organs and systems function properly. In fact, every function in your body takes place in water!!
DID YOU KNOW? That 60% of the hunger most people feel is really dehydration? Wow, that fact blew me away! So by drinking enough water, you will dramatically reduce those hunger pains that have been tricking you to eat more.

- Excessive thirst
- Dry mouth
- Little or no urination
- Muscle weakness

Here are some tips I share with my clients about consuming enough water each day:
Guzzling 30 ounces right when you wake up. At first it might be hard, but your body will get used to it.
Then throughout the day spread out your consumption. Try to pick three or four times a day when you can have a big glass of water, and then sip in between.
Don't let yourself get thirsty. If you feel thirsty, you are already becoming dehydrated. Drink when you're not thirsty yet.
