“After four kids and yo-yo dieting my entire life, I had gotten to a very high and unhealthy weight. My blood sugars were going higher and I was starting to have some heart problems. I was shocked when my doctor had suggested weight loss surgery, as my mother battled her weight her entire life.”

Anita’s mother ended up getting Type Two Diabetes along with high blood pressure. She passed away at a young age from complications to a stroke. Anita was worried she was going down the same path.

“My daughter had told me about a program she had success with, but I thought it was another diet.”

Your discipline on Plan has paid off. Now it’s time to make the transition to lifelong healthy eating.

You will expand and develop a new eating plan that you can use for the rest of your life. Six of these eating habits you’ve learned through the Habits of Health system.

Chapter 12 of Dr. Wayne Andersen’s Dr. A’s Habits of Health book presents an overview of the behaviors essential to maintaining a healthy weight:

  • Breakfast. By now, you’re in the habit of eating a healthy, portion-controlled breakfast every morning. Keep up this routine to ensure long-term weight loss.
  • Exercise. Increasing your activity level from the OPTAVIA Program is very important. Keep up your 30 minutes of Healthy Motion each day and consider dialing up the intensity level.
  • Support. Don’t forget your OPTAVIA Coach is always there to help you along your journey to lifelong transformation. They can provide much needed assistance and support when making this important transition.
  • Low-fat meals every two-three hours. You learned the importance of eating low-fat, high protein Fuelings every two-three hours. You’ve expanded the food choices that are available to you, but you should follow this same routine of eating small, high-protein meals on a regular basis.
  • Individual plan. Now that you’re past the initial weight-loss stage, it’s important to build a plan that gives you control and long-term strategies for life!
  • Monitor. Continue to check your weight on a weekly basis, and monitor your energy levels to ensure you’re not taking in too many calories.

Creating a New Me!

“I was overweight and then obese from childhood on, having grown up with plenty of food on the table and a family where emotional eating was the norm.”

Diets had never worked for Joice, but there was a new option of gastric bypass surgery. It changed her life in many ways - she lost some weight and became more active. But, bariatric surgery was only an answer in some situations. It also carried devastating lifelong consequences.

"My name is Noelle. I have been obese most of my adult life. I avoided scales, mirrors and cameras for a long time. In June of 2016 I took my children to the zoo and they were forced to wait for me every 10-15 min due to back pain and exertion. This was not the life I wanted for my children. It was time for a change. I decided to face the scale, weighing in at 414 pounds. I was devastated. I decided at that moment that I had to completely change my lifestyle for good or I wasn't going to be around much longer. I started my journey July 29th, 2016 and on my 1 year anniversary I had lost 207 pounds (half my body weight). I feel amazing and have so much energy. I now get to enjoy my life with my children....hiking, zip lining, swinging and so much more."

But there is a story behind these feet and putting one in front of the other (pun intended) by utilizing all 4 pillars of our lifestyle program...

"Progress not perfection" Huge part of losing weight is believing You Can Do It and realizing it's not going to happen over night. Starting at 414 pounds, I set small achievable goals for myself. If I focused on needing to lose 200 plus pounds, I would've been easily discouraged and overwhelmed. I focused on getting to 399 and then set 20 pound goals for myself. I hit 4 plateaus that would last 2 to 3 weeks and one that lasted almost a month. I stuck to my goals through all of them....why? Because this is a lifestyle change. Whether the scale is moving or not, I am improving my health every day by making the right food choices and moving my body. "Remember to never give up what you want most for what you want today."

“I was 37 years old, and I was at a low point in my life. Life was completely out of balance. I was working 10 plus hours a day and using food as a reward. I gained 50 pounds, and I was obese.”

Greg was burned out physically, emotionally, spiritually, and financially. He had no time for friends, and he only saw his family on holidays.

“I was so heavy and out of shape that I couldn't do my favorite things like surfing, yoga and snowboarding. I was embarrassed and frustrated because nothing seemed to work. I had failed at so many diets, even working with a triathlon coach five days a week didn't work.”

Fulfilling Dreams

“My motivation to lose weight stemmed from my worsening physical and mental health. I despised the way I looked and was close to 300 pounds. My body was starting rebel.”

Esther Hollander was overweight as a child and for the majority of her adult life, hitting her peak at 320 pounds. But, as she turned 40, she was determined to make fundamental changes and see a different reality.

“Being overweight was tough. Because I had little self-worth and confidence, I shied away from seeking new friends and career advancement, and felt closed off to general opportunities and experiences.”

Esther was acutely aware of her size and felt like people were staring and judging her. She felt embarrassed and ashamed most of the time so she avoided activities that required too much exertion or activities where her size was prohibitive.

“My children were being parented by a mom who was less active, involved and energized. And, I felt out of sync as a wife. I was not setting a healthy example for my household.”

Changes began when Esther connected with her OPTAVIA Coach who guided and encouraged her. In the course of nine months, she lost 137 pounds*.

Habit for living above the line.

Empower yourself by living above the line and making decisions that reflect you! Take responsibility and take steps to becoming the best version of yourself that you can be.

Here are some habits to help you live above the line:

  • Journal more. Take ownership for your actions and write them down. Take a few minutes each day to write a sentence or two reflecting on your day.
  • Sleep more. Try to get seven to eight hours of sleep a night. By getting restful sleep, you can become more aware throughout the day and be more accountable.
  • Drink more water. Try to drink about 64 ounces of water a day to stay healthy and help fight potential food cravings. Hydration is essential for your Optimal Wellbeing, can help you remain responsible, and assist you in making better decisions.
  • Reach out to your supportive Community. Connect with those who have likely been in a similar situation as your own. They can help guide you with making above the line decisions and keep you on track to your goals.
  • Get moving. Participate in healthy motion to help guide you along your journey. Not only is healthy motion good for getting your blood flowing and heart pumping, it is also a great tool for clearing your mind. Help focus your mind on what is most important to you.

Take ownership and be responsible and accountable on your journey to lifelong transformation. Sometimes just changes in thinking can make all the difference in the world. Check out some of these positive alternatives. 


Journey to Success - Susan Zartman

Living a Healthier Lifestyle

“I am so thankful to be living an OPTAVIA® life.”

Susan Zartman struggled with her weight for most of her life. “From the time I was a kid, I was on one diet or exercise plan to another. At times I would lose weight, but it would always come back…and bring more of its friends with it!”

A few years ago, Susan’s weight had her facing potential surgery. She knew that was not the path she wanted to take. “I knew I needed to do something.” Tired all of the time, Susan would take a nap in her car during her lunch breaks and again when she got home from work. Susan missed many things because she was constantly saying no.

Enough was enough, but Susan feared the big task that lay ahead of her and she struggled with how she was going to accomplish it. “I knew it was necessary.” Finally, one of her friends invited her to an online challenge. “There, I was part of a healthy Community where we were learning about the Habits of Health. Try these top tips for success while working towards your ambitions:

  • Surround yourself with the right people. Reevaluate your surrounding and find people who are positive, supportive, motivated, and successful. In doing so, you will help to motivate success within yourself. The right community of friends will also help drive the level of success you will achieve.
  • Embrace challenges that are thrown your way. Test yourself and face your fears. You will only grow stronger and get closer to your aspirations.
  • Try hard and focus on your goals. Prioritize when setting goals. Focus all your energy on what is most important. You are more likely to succeed, the more you try.
  • Never give up. However, also understand that there are obstacles you will need to overcome throughout your journey. Believe in yourself and your incredible ability to overcome failure and obstacles. Remember to always remain determined, keep a positive attitude, and commit. It’s okay to make mistakes and learn from them.
  • Add your own twist to these tips. To obtain success throughout your journey, follow the example of others, like your OPTAVIA Coach, on your journey to greatness.

Vibrant and Alive!

"I'm a mom over 40, a mother to 4, and a former athlete, whose health went downhill due to Fibromyalgia and Hashimotos Disease."

Fatigued and in constant pain, Meike Morrison tried everything to get healthy but struggled for a long time. She felt trapped.

"On March 31, 2014, I was the mom of five, four of whom were quadruplets, and I weighed an unhealthy 312 pounds!"

Karen Swantek had been overweight her entire life and had become accustomed to the discomfort; shocked stares of strangers and concerned looks of loved ones.

"I was blessed to have a loving husband, close friends, and a close relationship with God, but I was in pain daily from sciatica, bad knees, aching hips, and a host of other problems that go hand in hand with obesity, especially an internalized low self-esteem that I covered with a wicked sense of humor."

After two Coaches with OPTAVIA approached her about the program, Karen was skeptical, and due to her untrusting nature, she declined to participate. Finally, she tried the program in early 2014.

"I had reached the end of my own stubborn long rope, was sick of spinning my wheels, and being a poor role model to my children as well as a basically unhappy person despite my outward defensive humor."

Journey To Success - Laura

"Before I found this program, I felt trapped in my running shoes and chained to my treadmill."

As an exercise enthusiast and fitness professional, Laura Gaffney prided herself on keeping fit and being a role model in her community.

"I have to confess, however, this has never been as easy as I made it appear. I have done countless diets (some not so healthy) and food prep plans (time consuming and boring)."

In the summer of 2016, while training for her 7th marathon, Laura got off-course with her nutrition. Even while running about 50 miles per week, she managed to gain 30 pounds.

Katie Mitchell struggled with her weight since college, but through her recent journey to Optimal Health, she realized she always had a poor self-body image and an unhealthy relationship with food.

"Looking back at pictures of myself in high school, I wasn't overweight, but I thought I was. Once I started college, I did gain weight, and I gained even more after having my first baby and losing my mom to cancer."

Katie turned to food for comfort. She took some weight off before having her second child, but gained it back with pregnancy and stress. The turning point for her was the summer of 2016.

"My family and I took a vacation to the beach, and I saw pictures of myself in a bathing suit with my family. I thought, 'Is that really me?' So I decided something had to change. I needed to get healthy for myself and for my family. I needed to feel better, gain energy, and set a good example for my children."

At that time, Katie reached out to her OPTAVIA Coach. She knew she could help. She began her journey in September 2016, and in seven months she lost 65 pounds* and reached a healthy weight right before her birthday!

Celebrate With Non-Food Rewards

Take Care of You!

It's important to recognize your healthy eating and exercise accomplishments along your journey to lifelong transformation. And it's best to enjoy yourself with non-food rewards to keep you on track.

Why do rewards matter? Because when you celebrate your accomplishments, you remind yourself that your goals are attainable.

Each of these rewards celebrates health and promotes wellbeing. Schedule them throughout your journey and feel good about yourself every step of the way.

  • Schedule a massage! There is no better way to spoil your body. If you're on a budget, ask your spouse or partner to give you a massage.
  • Visit a personal trainer. Reinvigorate your workout routine. Hire a personal trainer for a single session or a series of sessions to learn new moves, change your program, or simply to bolster your motivation.
  • Take a day off work! Don't forget about those extra personal days you have stashed away. Take the day off to read a good book, discover new recipes, visit a museum, or get a manicure or pedicure.
  • Try a new haircut! When is the last time you changed your hairstyle? A new cut can boost your confidence immediately. Or if you already have a hairstyle that you like, invest in a blowout or hair color.
  • Take a day trip! A weekend getaway or a luxurious vacation is a fantastic way to celebrate. Pack the car and head to the mountains for a day of skiing with the family. Or grab your friends and head out on a hike for an afternoon of fun!

Second Time's The Charm

Jordon's Story:

“One of my 30 Before 30 goals was participating in the Escalante Canyons Marathon and 10-Mile Race in Boulder Utah with my husband. I felt so empowered!”

Jordon Cottam played four different sports year-round in high school and actually tried to gain weight so she wouldn’t seem so skinny. “But once I got to college, I started that yo-yo diet thing where I would reach a healthy weight, then reward myself with all the bad food I’d cut out to get to that weight, and gain the weight back again.”

Jordan reached her happy weight in 2009, when she got married. An unfortunate life event three years later sent her into a deep depression she couldn’t shake for almost two years. That’s when her OPTAVIA Coach, came into the picture.

“My ‘why’ was so motivating! I wanted to get healthy so I could have a baby. I wanted to have a healthy mindset so I could raise healthy children. I reached my goal weight in 4 ½ months on the OPTAVIA program and lost 45 pounds*.”

But there’s a second chapter to Jordon’s transformation story. After several months of struggling with a personal matter, she gained back all of the weight she’d lost and sank back into depression.

My husband saw how discouraged I was and suggested I make a list of 30 Before 30 things. I realized that a lot of those goals required me to be healthy financially, physically and emotionally in order to fulfill them. I finally stopped ignoring my Coach and got back into living Dr. A’s Habits of Health.”

After getting back on track and losing the weight, Jordon decided to become an OPTAVIA Coach and help others discover lifelong transformation with OPTAVIA. “I have faith and hope in the power of this program, and feel so blessed that I found it when I did. It helps me be okay with who I am at the end of the day.”
